The IMS Question and Test Interoperability specification (QTI) provides the structure for creating questions and tests which can be created in one system and delivered in another. The specification describes XML elements which can be combined to make questions which can have any of about 20 different means for students to input an answer ("interaction types"), and which have considerable flexibility in the design of the question or test and the feedback provided to the user. QTI Version 1.2 was implemented by several teams, including some publishers and assessment providers. This form of the specification had some serious anomalies, however, so Version 2.0 was released in 2003. This covered the question part of the specification, and the test aspect is included in Version 2.1. Current activity in the QTI community is centred around creating profiles to demonstrate interoperability and usability of the QTIv2.1 specification, with a view to its becoming a final specification in Summer 2011.
